What Is Intuition?

Intuition is the feeling that one gets, about someone or something, without actually knowing the facts. You see someone for the first time in your life, and you automatically take a liking or you immediately dislike that person, within the first few minutes of the meeting. It is a 'blink' response, something that happens in the blink of an eye.

Or someone tells you that he is just leaving on a journey, or for an interview or exam. In a flash, you see something going wrong. But you suppresses your wild imagination, and don't say anything.

Later on, you hear that that person has met with an accident, or that he missed his flight, or that he forgot to take his documents for the interview and got rejected etc, as the case may be.

This feeling that comes out of nowhere, and which has no logical or scientific basis, and which disappears equally fast, is called intuition. Women Are Better

The skill or quality of intuition can be honed and developed if you become aware of it. The only problem is, even if you get an intuitive feeling, you would tend to brush it off. Even if your intuition comes true, you would call it coincidence, or a one off thing, and let it pass.

Wishful Thinking

But there is a big drawback in the area of intuition. Intuition often overlaps with another phenomenon called wishful thinking.

Very often, because we strongly desire something, we wish that it would come true, and when it does, we claim that we had an intuition about it coming true. This is wishful thinking, and this is the biggest enemy to intuition.

So how do you know whether what you are thinking is intuition or wishful thinking?

If a personal gain is involved, the feeling that you get is more in favour of wishful thinking. If there is no personal gain in our sudden feeling (like a feeling that someone is going to meet with an accident), then it is likely to be intuition.

With time, as we give credence to our feelings, we may be proved wrong 50 percent of the times.
