Now what? You go home away from the safety net of the hospital, totally unprepared despite the nine months of planning and preparation. Don't worry it is completely normal to feel over whelmed.
The first step to a speedier recovery is REST - Plenty of REST.
Round the clock feedings, nappy changes and other child care activities are unavoidable. So it is advisable to rest when your baby naps. Drop all household chores, ignore visitors and catch those 40 winks. That way you will not feel cranky and run down.
Accept all the help that you get with baby care. Especially make sure you involve daddy in this. Besides increasing the bond between father and child it will free up your time to do things you enjoy - maybe a massage or a favorite TV show. You need not be a mom for 24 hours. The baby will do just fine without you for those relaxing moments.
Next be sure to eat a balanced diet. Breastfeeding moms are supplying their babies with very important nutrients, which are instrumental to growth and development. Even if you are not breast feeding it is important that you maintain your good health as it is necessary for the baby to have a mom with loads of energy.
You can safely resume exercising in about four weeks following a vaginal birth. Go slow with the abdominal workout till your doctor gives you the green signal.
Remember, if you are eating correctly then moderate exercise does not interfere with the production of breast milk. If you have had a cesarean section you will have to check with your doctor before beginning an exercise routine. To be absolutely safe it is best to work with a consultant who is trained in post-natal exercises.
If you feel sad, depressed, anxious, afraid, lonely and overwhelmed in the few days after your delivery, it is most likely caused by the shift in hormones. This is more popularly called baby blues. Be sure to discuss the same with your doctor and also involve your spouse. Sometimes all it takes is love and attention from a close family member.
Think about birth control options. You can get pregnant while breastfeeding and you can also get pregnant even if you are not menstruating. So plan for birth control as it is a good idea to have a 3-year gap between babies for your physical well being.
