Curves Ahead!
Fashion designer Karan Berry says, "Rajasthani mojris usually come with pointed toes and make a sturdy pair. They have more of thread embroidery (chain stitch), mirror and bead work."
They also include tie-n-dye (bandhini) and come in cotton fabrics as well. Some Rajasthani jootis also come with small red flowers on them similar to that of Kolhapuri chappals.
Though all mojris are made of cow hide, in some parts of Jaisalmer, people still use banned camel hide to make mojris.
These mojris are available in earthy or white milky colours. Want a coloured pair? Ask your local vendor if he can dye it in a specific colour. Or you could also order a special pair to be made for you.
Colour Splash!
Punjabi jootis are round in shape, particularly a heart shape. They have more of gota (patterns traced out on silver or gold strips that are cut out and sown on to the fabric) and phulkari (flower embroidery) work.
Punjabi jootis have more of geometric patterns and are similar to slip-ons.
These jootis are available in various colours and are very dainty. Pakistani jootis are less available here. However, they are famous for their petite workmanship as well as their sturdiness.
Best Buys
It is always preferable to buy jootis from the place they are made. Not only do you get variety from places such as Rajasthan, Punjab or Pakistan but they also last longer and are authentic.
Sole(ful) Woes!
Wearing a new pair of jootis can prove to be a bit painful. To avoid this, rub the inner part of the jootis with sandpaper. This will make the leather smooth.
Alternatively, apply Vaseline on your feet to avoid shoe bite. Moreover, wear skin stockings if you have delicate feet.
Since these are closed shoes and given the Indian weather, your feet are likely to stink! To avoid this, apply talcum powder before wearing them.
Fashion designer Pria Kataria Puri suggests opting for a pair of Kolhapuri chappals, especially if you have wide feet. Your feet should get enough space to breathe. But if you really want a pair of mojris or jootis, it would be advisable to order one.
Mojris or jootis make a great fashion statement especially when you team it up with a pair of jeans or a simple skirt. Add a pair to your existing shoe collection!
