The Obi: The Japanese Obi (a broad sash/belt worn with a Kimono) inspires this look. Use a contrast or self-printed light silk, jacquard or brocade scarf. Make a sash fold (adjust the width as needed) and wrap it flat over your waist (this is best avoided if you have a broad midriff or a large paunch). Team this with a Kimono, Kaftan or capped-sleeved dress or tunic.
Sarong-style: A large, light silk, silk-voile, chiffon or georgette printed or plain scarf is what you need. Make a bias fold, stretch the ends and wrap it over your hips. Now, knot the loose ends on one side of your waist. Wear this over your swimsuit to hide your heavy bottom or to add that hide ‘n’seek touch to your sensuous swimwear.
Shoulder wrap: Take a medium-sized, silk, silk-cotton or chiffon scarf and make a bias fold. Fold the length of the diagonal twice or thrice to make a stiff edge. Now lay this edge across your shoulders with the triangle’s point facing downward on your back. Knot the loose ends at the middle of your collarbones. Leave room for cowls (curvy drop folds) to form on your shoulders. This style looks elegant with a décolleté neckline or a turtleneck. You could secure the knot with a brooch or a small studded pin.
Tie knot: Imitate your man and go the masculine way with this style. Take a skinny, long scarf (a la Anna Sui, Ralph Lauren and BCBG) in a light fabric and knot it loosely around your neck like a tie. You could carry this off with your shirt or tee.
