New Delhi: The first month of the Hindu calendar, Chaitra, begins on Monday. In many parts of the country, it marks the beginning of a new year and also, the beginning of spring.
While Maharashtrians are celebrating Gudi Padwa, people in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are celebrating Ugadi.
Ugadi Pachchadi, a dish made of jaggery, raw mangoes, neem flowers and tamarind, is cooked in homes across Karnataka.
People in Jammu and Kashmir are celebrating Navreh. Kashmiri Pandits celebrate this festival by taking a holy dip in the sacred spring of Vichar Nag and also inaugurate the new calendar on this day.
