Style Those Walls
Wall murals may be expensive but you can improvise with wallpaper. You could try interesting prints or finishes like metallic and leather. Try Indian wallpapers rather than imported ones. These cost anywhere from Rs.35 to Rs.80 per sq. ft. On the other hand, a wall mural will cost you at least Rs.6000 per sq. ft.
Don't be afraid to experiment a bit. For instance, you could use wallpaper for the bottom half of the walls and a coat of neutral paint for the top half.
Remember, wallpaper isn't the best idea if you live near the sea. It is likely to peel off with moisture. Instead, go with a coat of neutral coloured paint. Highlight any one wall (preferably the one behind the bed) in a vibrant colour like red, orange or aqua blue.
Look-alike Flooring
Italian marble starts at Rs.450 per sq. ft. That's definitely beyond your budget. So try 2 ft. by 2 ft. vitrified tiles instead. They look as good and cost between Rs.75 - Rs.90 per sq. ft.
Another option is ceramic tiles. Their glossy finish is perfect for that elegant look. You can pick these tiles for about Rs.30 - Rs.45 per sq. ft.
Wooden flooring will cost you about Rs.300 - Rs.800 per sq. ft. Don't spend a bomb when you can get look-alike laminated flooring for Rs.90 - Rs.250 per sq. ft. or vinyl flooring for Rs.65 - Rs.200 per sq. ft.
So there you have your flooring for one-third the price! Plus, laminate and vinyl are easy maintenance and don't get scratched easily.
Modify Old Furniture
Getting rid of all the bulky furniture in your bedroom? Hold it right there. With a bit of modification, your worn out dresser will look brand new.
Get a good carpenter to sand down the bed, side tables, dressing table, wardrobe and other bits of furniture thoroughly. Then have it freshly polished. You could also redo the laminate of the furniture to give it a new look.
You could also ask your carpenter to use the wood of some of the bulky stuff to create slimmer, compact furniture. For instance, saw off a chunky headboard from your old fashioned bed. Then use the wood to make a slim headboard, upholstered in rich fabrics.
If you have a beat-up dressing table that is occupying too much space, knock off the dresser. Keep the mirror for that antique touch and wall-mount just one or two drawers below it. This will take up less space and give your room a retro look.
Don't dump that steel cupboard. Instead, paint a funky, abstract print over it.
