It is about time you wake up. It is not okay to go around in circles for years before you decide what career to choose.
Dr. Aneeta Arora, Lifestyle and De-stress Consultant explains why you could be indecisive.
- You have financial security. If your parents or spouse is financially able to support you and sponsor your various educational experiments, you might be taking advantage of the fact.
- You lack patience. You might be switching careers because you are unable to give your career time to take off. You get bored easily because you are constantly looking for the next high and not focussing on the job at hand.
- You are putting your hands into every pie. It is fine to have many hobbies and interests but you cannot make a career of all of them.
- You are irresponsible. You are not willing to take responsibility for the choices you make in life.
- You have the herd mentality. You feel attracted to a field because it looks glamorous or trendy. Also, you might attracted to the money that you think you will be able to make in a particular industry.
Reality Check
- Random degrees mean absolutely nothing.
- You may not be able to land a good job because employers might fear you will jump careers.
- Stints in every industry don't count for experience.
- You appear unfocussed, indecisive and immature.
Snap Out of It!
"It is natural for a fresher not to know his exact career path. But if you have been going around for a couple of years jumping jobs and accumulating random degrees, you know you have a problem," says Swati Salunkhe, Managing Director and Counsellor, Growth Centre.
Swati explains that she has people coming to her at 40+ years telling her they don't know what they are doing in their profession. By then it is too late to get help. So get help while you can.
4 Steps to Clear the Confusion
1. Accept you have a problem
The most important thing to do if you are in any of the above situations is to recognize you have a problem. As long as you think it is okay to be the way you are, you won't be able to get help.
2. Get help
You might not be able to figure out the cause for your problem immediately. So feel free to talk about your problem with someone you trust, be it a parent, boss or even a career counsellor. But be prepared for criticism not a pep talk.
3. Take Stock
Find out the different career options and what each one will require of you. Then you will need to find out whether you are fit for the job. It is rather late for you to take an aptitude test.
4. Make a Decision
Take a day or two to think about what you really want to do. You don't want to do anything you might regret later. Once you make your career choice, don't turn back. Go through with whatever the new career path requires of you.
Do not wait a lifetime to arrive at a career decision. Do it now!
