Life couldn't get better for a junior, right? Wrong!
Before you jump your job for a so-called "better opportunity", you better make sure the switch is worth it. And here's how you can find out.
Do Your Research
Never go unprepared for an interview. Find out about the company, whether it is by surfing the web or speaking to people in the same field.
If it is a private company, you may not be able to figure out how it has performed based on Balance Sheets. In such a case you might want to ask yourself the following questions.
- Have people heard of this organisation?
- Is it a well-established organisation?
- Do they have famous companies listed as clients?
- Do they advertise?
Also, during your interview you can find out things like whether they have a structured HR policy or not.
The next thing to research is the current pay scale for freshers in your industry. This way you will know whether you are worth more than what they are offering you.
Ask Relevant Questions
As a fresher, your main focus should not be on your salary but rather on growth. Always remember, as you grow so will your salary.
So important as it might seem, avoid asking your interviewer questions about perks, bonuses etc. Instead, ask him about your job role, expectations, responsibilities etc. The more responsibilities involved, the more experience you gain.
Feel free to ask about the company's funding source. If just one or two individuals fund the company, you might want to think twice about this offer.
Don't Rush Your Decision
The company hiring you has been playing the field for years while you have just entered the field. So don't feel compelled to take the job just because you have had a one-hour long discussion with your future employer.
If you have alarm bells ringing in your head, follow your intuition. Ask your interviewer when you are expected to join. Depending on that you can request him to give you a day or two to consider the offer.
