"This is a key question employees should ask themselves," says Shiza Ansari, an HR professional, says.

The HR professionals list the criteria they look for:
- Initiative: "It is extremely important for all organisations. Skills and attitude may develop after training, but willingness to accept work responsibilities can't be taught," says Deepti Gohain.
- Creativity: Tejal Ranpara says, "Not only does creativity bring in better results, but it also builds a healthy work atmosphere, goodwill in the team."
- Diligence: HR professionals agree that good work means nothing if not delivered on time. That's why, a project completed successfully within time allotted, is a great achievement.
- Target practice: "We give targets and revise them to see how much work responsibility a person can handle. That is a key criteria, especially for the HR department to justify a bonus," Shiza adds.
- Contribution to the organisation: teamwork, goodwill, flexibility, sustainability and more.
Tejal points out, "It may sound unfair, but the success of your latest project could be on your superior's mind while rating you." She believes that a quarterly or half-yearly performance review is better, in terms of consistency.
According to Deepti, success of short-term projects matters less, if an employee is dedicated and has added value to the organisation over the years. "Projects come and go, but the person's attitude and initiative are always valuable to a company," Deepti adds.
