Notes from Far Away
When Hema Kappat, a home maker and mother of two became pregnant for the first time, it was joyous news for her hubby and her.
"This was in late 70s and we didn't have a telephone at that time, so I wrote to my parents. But I wanted to surprise them," remembers Hema.
And what a surprise it was!

She did not mention anything about the pregnancy in the letter. Instead she sent along a small satchet of baby powder.
"My mother loves the smell of baby powder and the minute she saw that she realised what it symbolised and she cried," says Hema.

For Ragini Navare, the good news had to be contained for three months from her relatives and friends.

Because the elders in her family advised her to do so. "According to them, it was traditional and was done to avoid the evil eye. There could be many people who can't bear to see our happiness and can wish for something bad," she reminisces.
