So what do you do if you are alone and your water breaks and the nearest hospital is 20kms away?
Prepare! If possible, two weeks before hand.
"Keep an emergency bag ready with all the essential items sorted out properly. You don't want to miss out on anything in the mad dash to the hospital," says Dr. Mugdha Raut, a Mumbai based gynaecologist and obstetrician.
Must Have's for your Labour Bag
Phone Numbers
Keep phone numbers of friends and family on speed dial. So incase you happen to be alone when the labour starts, you can reach people immediately.
Medical Reports
Do not forget to carry your medical details, especially if you have had complications during pregnancy.
Maternity Pads
A sanitary pad would do too. This can be used when the water breaks or in case of excessive bleeding post delivery.
Water Spray
Keep a bottle of water in the fridge until you leave for hospital. It is good for gentle cool downs during labour.
Clothes
Although hospitals supply with gowns and nighties, do consider a clean t-shirt or an open front nightie. Also add some lingerie and proper clothes for you and your baby when returning home.
Sponge
Keep a facial sponge or a clean towel handy to dab the face and body.
Slippers or Comfortable Footwear
Some hospitals don't provide you with any foot wear. So don't forget to carry one in case you wanted to take a stroll while recuperating post delivery.
Nursing Bras
Keep more than two pairs as you can get quite sweaty and it is useful if the breast starts dripping when you lactate.
Toiletries and Cosmetics
Hair bands and brush, toothbrush and paste, lotions and talcum powder and other toiletries as desired.
Snacks and Drinks
Keep healthy snacks and drinks like fruit juices for yourself and the person who is accompanying you.
And lastly, don't panic!
"It is normal to miss out on things. Relax. Practice deep breathing. Start preparing yourself for the D-day, so when it does happen you are ready to handle the situation more calmly," concludes Dr. Raut.
