Why?
This is because once infected, it would take at least a week or more for the symptoms to surface.
In fact, in some people it may take even more than three weeks and in some there would be no strong signs of discomfort at all.
So how do you know you are infected?
Consult your gynaecologist if you happen to undergo frequently:
- Nausea
- Pain in the lower abdomen ranging from dull to severe
- Mild fever
- Unusual vaginal discharge
- Bleeding in between your menstrual cycle
- Pain during intercourse
- Burning sensation during urination
The parts that get infected initially are the cervix and urethra (the opening of your bladder). If left untreated the infection can even spread to your fallopian tubes and rectum.
Is It Serious?
Chlamydia, caused by bacteria which get transmitted through sexual intercourse or through bodily fluids, if recognised on time, can be treated.
However, ignoring even minor signs for long can lead to cause irreversible damage to your reproductive organs, resulting in infertility.
Can You Get Infected?
Infection is possible through sexual intercourse, including oral sex. If your partner is infected, the bacteria can get discharged from his penis.

You may be at a high risk of infection if you are not mature reproductively, that is, if you are a teenager. The risk further increases if you have more than one sexual partner.
Apart from that, you also increase the risk of getting re-infected if your partner is not completely cured of the infection.
