Has going to the bathroom become too painful to bear?
If yes, then you may be suffering from Vaginal Yeast Infection.
What is Vaginal Yeast Infection?
Vulvovaginal Candidiasis, Monilial Vaginitis or vaginal yeast infection is a common fungal infection. It occurs when there is overgrowth of the fungus Candida in your body.
This fungus is normally present with other bacteria and yeasts in your intestinal tract and vagina in a healthy balance. But it starts multiplying when the normal pH level of the vagina (4.5) increases.
Reasons for Yeast Infection
Antibiotics
When you take antibiotics frequently, the pH level in the vagina increases and kills the normal protective bacteria. This allows the fungus and the infection to grow.
If you are on antibiotics for more than 15 days, the risk of infection increases. There is no specific antibiotic ingredient which causes this infection though.
Illness
Yeast infections may also occur if you have a weak immune system or suffer from HIV or AIDS.
Hygiene
Sweating around the vaginal area, wearing tight clothes, tight, dark coloured or synthetic underwear that does not give you enough ventilation can also lead to infections.
Obesity
Being overweight or obese can trigger the infection because of poor ventilation in your genital area.
If You Are Pregnant...
...then you will be prone to infection because of hormal changes. If you have the infection when you deliver, there is a chance that your baby will contract it.
Common Symptoms
- Abnormal vaginal discharge which is slightly watery, white and thick.
- Vaginal itching or burning.
- Pain, swelling and/or redness of the vulva.
- Vaginal pain or irritation during sex.
- Pain while urinating.
Consult your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Do not neglect it or it could spread to your pelvic region and enter and block the fallopian tube.
Repeated Infection
If you have noticed that you get this infection at least four times in one year without the effect of antibiotics, you have a repeated problem which you must get checked and treated immediately.
Sexual Transmission
If you have the infection and your partner has sensitive skin, he can develop symptoms like itching and penile rash after sex. However this is very rare since the infection is caused from the Candida (fungus) present in your own body.
Tests
- A physical pelvic examination where the doctor will look for redness and swelling.
- A pH test to check whether the pH level in your vagina has increased.
- Your doctor will take a sample of your vaginal discharge and test it for the presence of this fungus. This test will cost a maximum of Rs.1, 000 and you need to get it done if your doctor asks for it.
