These are just some of the doubts swirling your mind post any gynaecological surgery including childbirth through a C-section.
We list out 15 common queries about what to expect post any gynaec-related surgery.
1. Swelling and Pain
From a surgical point of view, any stitches and cuts will leave you with some amount of pain and discomfort including swelling and bruises.
If you had a vaginal surgery, especially a major surgery such as a vaginal tightening or vaginal prolapse, the stitches made during the surgery requires at least three to four weeks to heal. The process may also be accompanied by pain and some amount of swelling.
Within six weeks, you can expect to be completely healed. However, if the pain or swelling does not lessen, make sure you consult your doctor immediately. It could be the indication of an infection.
You can experience tummy bloating. However, this is only for a few days and can be relieved by eating properly and doing some light exercises like walking around and eating light as well.
2. Sexual Intercourse
"If you have had a major surgery, it is better to abstain from sex for at least three to four weeks and in severe cases for at least six weeks," informs Dr. Sriram Gopal, Consultant Gynaecologist, D Y Patil Hospital, Mumbai.
Also due to hormonal changes, your sex drive will see a dip for some days post operation. But more importantly, stay off sex to allow the healing process to happen faster and to avoid extra body movements and infection, which may delay healing.
3. Vaginal Bleeding
You may experience some amount of vaginal bleeding post operation. Do not mistake it for resuming of your menstrual cycle. It may last upto a week or more. However, use only sanitary pads and not tampons. This is to avoid possibility of infection.
If the bleeding does not stop after a week or if the discharge looks different or smells foul, intimate your gynaecologist immediately. It could be an indication of infection or if the wound is not healing properly and on time.
