"ADHD is characterised by three cardinal features - inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity," says a psychiatrist with Sitaram Bhartiya Institute, Dr Amit Sen.Twelve-year-old Ankur's teachers compared him to a tornado. His pushy attitude interfered with the play of his classmates who complained of his aggressive behaviour. Tired of his tantrums and poor performance in class, his parents finally sought help.
"When he came to us, he was extremely inattentive and very verbally aggressive. He used to talk all the time about irrelevant details. But over time he has calmed down," says Director of Orkids Learning Centre, Geet Oberoi.
Others like Ankur can have co-travelling problems. About 35% of kids diagnosed with ADHD also have Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD). Up to 25 per cent of kids with ODD can have phobias and other anxiety-related disorders. They could also be suffering from manic depression, insomnia and learning disorders.
Different treatments are available for kids with ADHD including medication, alternative therapies, education and special counselling. But you have to remember that bringing up these kids is also a process. So parents should set priorities for themselves. They need to let the kids know that they are loved.
