But suddenly, you aren’t as kicked about your upcoming baby as you were the first time you saw that little blue stick.
In fact, the very thought of becoming a mom downright depresses you.
You have definitely heard about postnatal depression. However, prenatal depression is also fairly common, especially later during your pregnancy.
As Gynaecologist Dr. Rishma Dhillon Pai explains, "Any situation with hormonal variations brings about radical mood changes. Very often pregnant women have unprovoked crying spells."
Something as simple as your husband asking you to take your pills or a colleague asking about your health could provoke a crying spell.
Studies have shown that up to 15% of women experience depression during pregnancy, which in turn greatly increases the risk of postpartum depression.
Why So Glum?
Besides hormonal changes, prenatal depression could also be due to external factors. As Psychiatrist Dr. Leena Bahrani explains, "An unplanned pregnancy could put a lot of stress on a woman and she will start to worry about life after she has the baby. This could lead to depression."
An unplanned pregnancy is especially a concern in cases where you don’t have the right family support or you are going through financial problems.
"At times there may be tension between the couple that causes depression," says Dr. Bahrani. Pregnancy and a new baby bring on a lot of changes. Your sex life may not be as active as it use to. Also, you will tend to be concerned about the baby all the time, which might make your partner feel neglected.
But remember, these are all things that can be worked around with a little communication and mutual support. So talk to your partner and tell him how you feel.
Don’t Look So Good
Your skin is breaking out, you look like a pumpkin and your belly feels like a bumpy road… It is only natural for you to be a bit bummed out by it all.
But you can still look and feel great throughout your pregnancy… see how!
Also remember, you can start exercising about six weeks after your deliver and will have those fab abs back in no time!
