But, more often than not, leg cramps in pregnancy are caused by mineral deficiencies.
Find out more about cramps and how to prevent it during pregnancy.
Will it Harm Baby
Leg cramps during pregnancy are usually due to lack of supplements like potassium and calcium. During pregnancy the fluids and hormones normally go off balance. Sodium and potassium are lost through body fluids. These cramps can occur anytime during the pregnancy.
Your foot and toe are also likely to swell. This is usually because of the pressure of the abdomen and the lack of blood supply to your legs.
But, will this lack of blood supply cause any harm to your baby? No.
Most of the blood supply at this time is directed toward your baby. This is why the blood supply to your legs is minimised. So, you need not worry. Your baby is getting enough blood supply.
Homey Remedies
Here is what you can do at home to minimise and prevent cramp pains:
- Drink coconut juice. It is a good source of potassium.
- Drink liquids that have sugar and electrolytes, like lemon juice.
- Hot fermentation
- Massage your feet and toe gently.
- Rest your leg on the pillow
Apart from that, make sure you have supplements like Calcium and Vitamin E under your doctor's supervision.
Remember that swelling of the toes and feet can also be a sign of high blood pressure. This should not be taken lightly.
