What Is It?
When your uterine cavity gets is divided into two parts by a thin tissue, it is called septate uterus. The tissue is called a septum.
Usually, improper development of the reproductive organs causes this condition. You are born with this condition.
During early development in the womb, a girl child has two cervices and her uterine cavity is divided during the first three months of pregnancy.
As pregnancy progresses in the second trimester, the division disappears and the two uterine cavities merge to become one.
However, in some cases, the tissue remains and the uterine cavity does not become one. This is called a septate uterus.
Will It Harm?
If your septum lines the top of your uterine cavity and does not divide the cavity into two, it usually does not cause problems.
However, you could have problems conceiving or may have a premature delivery. If the septum divides more than half of your uterine cavity, your baby may end up in a breech position due to the lack of space. You could also have a miscarriage during your second trimester as the baby is unable to move.
