Many things you take for granted on a daily basis can affect your baby while you are pregnant.
The key to avoid these mishaps is to be aware.
Basic Hygiene
Sometimes, just not keeping basic hygiene can lead to complications.
Dr. Geetanjali Shah, Gynaecologist and the writer of the pregnancy book Suprejesathi Garabhasanskar says, "One of the basic things that Indian women tend to ignore is their personal hygiene."
According to her, during pregnancy you have to change your underwear at least two times a day. If you don't observe this hygiene, you can develop infections like UTI that can lead to a preterm delivery.
In some cases the infection gets passed on to your baby. This is dangerous as unlike in adults the infection can spread in the entire body of the baby. Your baby will also be exposed to antibiotics at a very young age.

Overeating
You might have heard how papaya should be avoided during pregnancy, but even pineapple and spicy food can cause complications.
Dr. G Mansukhani, Gynaecologist, Jaslok and Raheja Hospital says, "Eating a lot of pineapples and spicy food generates heat in your body, which may lead to diarrhoea. This in turn may result in early uterine contraction."

Caffeine
Addicted to coffee? You may want to go easy on it during your pregnancy.
According to Dr. Shah, while it is fine to have two cups of light coffee, extremely strong coffee should be avoided. You have to especially be careful because if your uterine walls are not very strong, it can lead to early uterine contraction.

Carry Heavy Objects
While you can carry on with your routine household work, it is advisable not to carry heavy objects. Also, make sure you avoid work that requires you to squat repeatedly.
Dr. Shah says, "In this case, you may end up getting a muscle spasm for which you would have to take medication. This can be harmful for your baby."
Bumpy Rides
Your travel requires you to go through bumpy rides? Avoid rickshaws and sitting on the backseat of the bus for a while.
"Frequent bumpy and jerky rides can result in your cervix widening up more than necessary. You may also suffer from early labour pains," says Dr. Shah
Crowded Places
It is not possible to completely lock yourself indoors and not meet anybody. However, make sure you avoid going to crowded places.
Dr. Shah explains, "When you are pregnant your immunity is low. While it is not good to get infected with normal cold and fever, it is worse if you catch diseases like German measles or chicken pox. If this happens, there may be a chance that your baby will be born with disabilities like an abnormal brain, deafness or blindness."
