Bed rest is no vacation; you have to be dependant on others to make things work for you.
But, with a little planning and a proactive approach, there are things you can do make it more tolerable.
What Is Bed Rest?
According to most doctors, complications in pregnancy are the most common reason why you will be advised bed rest. Possible complications include:
- Preterm labour
- Placental problems
- Previous miscarriages
- Multiple babies
- Low amniotic fluid
- Unexplained bleeding
- High blood pressure
- Gestational diabetes
Dr Mamta Jha, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist says, "If you doctor advises bed rest you need to speak to him/her to find out about your condition and exactly what level of activity is allowed. Questions such as can I get up to use the bathroom? Can I take a bath everyday? Can I do light sitting chores? How much walking is safe? should be asked. Also, how much bed rest your doctor prescribes depends on your condition."
If you're on strict bed rest, you won't able to leave your bed for any reason. In other cases, you may get up and use the bathroom. Or you may be asked to reduce your activity level, stop working and rest for brief periods of time.
"Whatever your doctor prescribes; it's crucial to follow instructions. Women on bed rest need to hear - from their doctor, friends or spouse - that they are actively helping themselves and their babies by resting," says Dr Jha.
Surviving Best Rest
1. Get Comfortable
If you are confined to the bed for a major part of the day, you may have muscle cramps, stiffness and numbness. Says Dr Jha, "You may have lower back pain and may feel sore and tired. During this time, avoid sleeping on your back and on your belly. Curling up or sleeping on your side - preferably on your left side - with one leg crossed over the other and with a pillow between them is ideal. You can also buy a good body pillow for making side sleeping more comfortable. Wear loose cotton clothes and make sure the temperature of the room is appropriate.
2. Organise Your Environment
Keep everything you need during the day by your side. Arrange for bed attached cabinets or shelves and keep items nearby - telephone, books, magazines, water, TV and VCR with remote controls, laptop, snacks, notepad, pens, phone charger, tissues, hairbrush, soap strips, medications, paper plates, wastebasket etc. You can ask family members before they head to work to help you shower and change. "In case you on strict bed rest, you will need someone's help for a bowel movement. Discuss options with your doctor and your family members," says Dr Jha.
