Usually, you will be prescribed antibiotics to treat the UTI. However, if you are pregnant, there are extra precautions to be taken.
Dr. Gandhi says, "Only when we know that it is a severe case do we prescribe antibiotics."
You may be worried about your unborn baby's health, especially if you are prescribed antibiotics to get rid of the infection. However, Dr. Changulani says, "That there are certain antibiotics that do not harm the baby and only those ones are prescribed for the UTI as well."
Prevention Is Cure
Rather than being treated, is ideal to just prevent getting a Urine Tract Infection. While it is not always possible to keep it in check, make sure you do the following to reduce the incidence of UTI:
- Keep yourself clean. Leaving your genital area damp can lead to the infection.
- Drinking at least eight to ten glasses of water.
- Do not hold back your urine. Make sure you visit the loo regularly as well.
A Thing to Keep in Mind
According to Dr. Changulani, having sex during pregnancy can also aggravate UTI.
For example, if your husband has UTI, he would pass it on to you, and the infection would recur even though you take adequate medication.
Effects
In extreme cases of UTI, your baby might get affected. Dr. Vindya says, "In an aggravated state, it can lead to premature delivery or low baby weight."
So make sure that you visit your gynaecologist for a regular check-up.
