But is this safe for your baby?
While there is no concrete evidence that beauty treatments affect the foetus, gynaecologists advise against them.
Any odour, radiation or chemical absorbed by the skin could have a negative effect on your baby.
Streaking
Besides the nauseating fumes, if the chemicals used are absorbed by your scalp, it could harm your baby. This is especially possible during the first three months of pregnancy. It is when the foetus is just forming and the slightest chemical inhaled or absorbed by the skin could damage it.
The same goes for any other hair treatments like perms, hair straightening, etc.
If you must use hair dye or colour, do so after your first trimester. Ask your stylist to be careful and avoid the scalp while applying it on.
Also, try and do it in a well ventilated area. This will reduce the intensity of the fumes. If possible, get a note from your doctor with details of your condition - how far along you are, any other relevant medical conditions - so the stylist is aware.
But if you must apply the dye yourself, be sure to wear gloves. You could also try henna or vegetable dyes - they come in a variety of colours and are said to be very safe.
Bleaching
If you use skin bleaches and hair removal creams, you have no worries there.
Since they are applied on only for a few minutes, they are considered harmless. So go ahead with your regular routine. The same goes for face masks and peels.
However, it is always best to avoid experimenting with anything new - you never know the effect it will have on you, and probably your baby too.
