Good Old T
Copper T (Cu-T) is a small T-shaped Intrauterine Device (IUD) that is placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy. The insertion is be done by a doctor. The Cu-T works for three years and the advanced ones last for seven years.
The IUD releases copper in the uterine cavity, which prevents the sperm from fertilising the egg. In case of fertilisation it stops the fertilised egg from making its way to the uterus because the copper kills the fertilised egg.
There are two brands of Cu-Ts available in India.
- Cu-T 200
- Multiload 250 and Multiload 375
Multiload is an international brand. Multiload 250 and Multiload 375 is easier to insert as compared to Cu-T 200.
You need to check with your doctor to find out if Cu-T is the right contraceptive for you. Remember to tell your gynaecologist about your medical history. Ideally any woman with at least one child, a clear medical record and no history of any sexually transmitted disease is a good candidate.
Some doctors say that the best time to insert Copper T is during your period since the cervix is soft and open during this time.
Here are a few reasons why women rely on the T.
- Copper-T works for three years and the advanced ones last for seven years.
- It is easily reversible. The IUD can be removed with very little pain.
- It is affordable. Cu-200 is available for Rs. 250 and Multiload 375 costs Rs. 413.
- Does not interrupt sexual intercourse.
- You can insert the Copper-T upto seven days after having unprotected sex and still avoid a pregnancy.
