Are you too making more than what your husband is making?
Ex-couple Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapur were a perfect example of the woman doing better than the man career wise. They hooked up when she was an established name and he was still finding his bearings in Bollywood.
But is it necessary that all such relationships end up on the rocks?
Money Equals Power
It is often observed that a man, initially supportive and appreciative of you earning more than him, chooses to make it an issue.
Psychiatrist Dr. Bharat Shah says, "Indian society conditions you to believe that the man is supposed to fulfil the role of the breadwinner and provider. So when wife or girlfriend earns more than him, he may feel inferior, inadequate."
The salary a man earns is often linked to his self worth. More money a man brings home, more worthy he feels.
Most relationship problems over a woman's economic success are rooted in this insecurity and societal pressure.
To Marry or Not To Marry
Women of today might have opened their minds about accepting partners from other cultures or religion, but most of them seem wary of accepting a man earning less than them.
Sheetal Doshi, 27, banking professional says, "I would never consider marrying anyone who earns less than me. I would expect him to make more or at least equal my salary."
"I can support myself but it would be nice to know that I can leave my job and focus on kids without affecting our standard of living. I would like that as an option."
For Francesca Mascarenhas, 30, media professional, it's not about standard of living. "It's about my money. I don't want to marry a guy who is after my money. If the guy earns more, I will be sure that he is not marrying me for money, but love," she says.
Munira Lakdawala, 24, client service executive, has another point. She wants to enter marital bond on equal footing with her husband. "If he earns less than me, the gap will always exist between us. I am also OK with guys doing this - if someone told me he can't marry me because I earn way less than him, it's ok," she says.
