Let's start with those drapes. You can select from a variety of pastel cotton curtains; choose between self-prints, stripes, checks and florals. For that light, breezy look, go with simple cotton sheers. Another option is matted blinds.

While it's not always possible to change sofa upholstery, you can add that summer spunk to your furniture with a few cotton accessories. For example, bright blue cushions will instantly uplift dark wood furniture.

When it comes to rugs and dhurries, go with bright cotton roll-outs or even paper, shaggy rugs.

Summer is also the season to bring out your crystals. Let them sparkle in the summer sun. Crystal vases with fresh flowers will instantly perk up your room... the flowers will also be great room fresheners.

Be sure to work around your curio arrangement too - conches, shells, or any bright knick-knack that reminds you of the playfulness of summer. You could also keep a few magazines around - their covers always reflect the season's best.

Make a Splash!

Although fun at first, the rains can get a little dull and depressing. So choose bright colours like lime greens and yellows to perk up your room, and your mood. But be careful about the fabrics you choose. Pick organza or even light cotton curtains and cushion fabrics - they will dry off faster and are easy to maintain.

As for the floor, roll up those rugs and go bare - it will give your room an airy, spacious look. But remember to place a thick cotton rug by the door - it will save a lot of time wasted while cleaning those mucky tracks around the house.

And with the season's unpredictable power cuts, it would be a good idea to keep a few candles around. For example a few floor candles in the corner of your room with track lights will make a nice focus wall. Remember to choose light coloured candles; they will make your living room look brighter.
