
Measure your home yourself. This way you know exactly how much material you need and won't waste money buying extra.
Painting
1. Instead of relying on the painter to measure your home you can do it yourself. You can calculate the area of the room and estimate the amount of paint you will need using the simple formula of length × breadth × height.
2. Don't forget to take into account the beams, pillars, window frames and niches that will also require to be painted.
3. Once you are done you will need to subtract the area of the windows, doors and skirting.

Flooring
4. When doing up the flooring you will have to calculate the area of the room (length × breadth).
5. You must include niches. Also the area of the skirting for both walls and columns is important.
Curtains
6. When making curtains, measure the length of the window right from the curtain rod.
7. The curtain length should be a minimum of 6 inches below the windowsill and a maximum of 2 inches above the ground.
8. You require cloth that is one and a half times the width of the window for gathered curtains.
9. For American pleated curtains you will need three times the amount of cloth that is used for regular tab top curtains.

Furniture
10. While measuring the room for furniture remember to leave about 2 inches from the walls. This way the walls won't get damaged.
11. If you want to place furniture against the wall make sure it is not in front of a window. Otherwise the ledge of the window will get in the way.
12. Avoid placing bulky furniture against the walls on either side of the doorframe. Though there is enough space for it, it makes entering the room difficult.

13. Always make sure that bookshelves and cabinets are placed at a height above 4ft. This makes them accessible and at the same time they won't get in the way.
14. Large pieces of furniture like beds and sofas might not fit through the doorway. Always measure the doorway diagonally. This way you will know if the furniture can pass through when tilted.
