Wall of Fame

Have your guests riveted with an interesting focus wall in the passageway. Paint one wall with a bright hue like aqua, fuchsia or yellow ochre. You could give the wall a rugged texture too. Then hang up a whole lot of framed family photographs on the wall. It will give the passageway the effect of a museum as your guests walk through.

If you have a passageway that leads up to the kid's room, allow your kids to decorate the wall. Give the walls a coat of whitewash and let your kids paint print their grubby little hands on the wall. Ask some of their friends to come over and write messages on the wall and sign. You can also hang up artwork. The idea is to keep the wall bright and funky.

Fresh and Green

A stone planter with a fresh palm would work wonders for a corridor. You could also have a wooden lattice painted white with creepers entwined around it.

Add freshness and calm to the passage with a water fountain in the corner. The sound of the fountain can be very relaxing. But if a water fountain is not what you want, a fish tank would be a great alternative. You can have a huge one fitted onto one wall of the corridor.

Light It Up

Nobody likes a dark dingy corridor. So brighten up the corridor with miniature art deco chandeliers.

If you are more fascinated by the Arabian look, go with a combination of brass and coloured glass hanging lanterns.

You could also have a narrow granite ledge along both walls with tiny scented tea lights (candles) lit up on them.

A Niche of Its Own

Make use of a niche in the wall to place a small statue of a deity or even a priceless artefact. You could have it enclosed in glass maybe. Then fit in a spotlight from above to accentuate it.

Relaxing Retreat

If you have enough space in the passageway, include a comfy sofa or couch. And don't miss out on the fluffy cushions for that inviting feel. A small bookshelf to accompany the couch wouldn't be a bad idea at all.

But if a couch is way oo large for your passage, go with a sleek box-like bench with storage underneath it. It will double up as a neat shoe cabinet for your guests' shoes.

Classy with Mirrors

A carved wooden table with a marble top would be a great way to lend character to the space. Grace the table with a porcelain Ming vase or a platter with stone pebbles or pot pourri.

Place a large square or rectangular mirror on the wall above the table. You could also try a couple of smaller mirrors of different shapes. Mirrors are just the thing your guests need when they arrive to check themselves out.
