But do these sweeteners cause more harm than good?
Just One Spoon, Please
Artificial sweeteners are much sweeter than sugar, so it takes a smaller amount to sweeten foods. But when you switch from sugar to sweeteners, you tend to use the similar amount. That is the dangerous issue!
According to Nutritionist Dr. Anjali Mukerjee, "Sugar-free soft drinks, candy and desserts often provide few, if any, beneficial nutrients. So, avoid them as far as possible."
Cancer Call
Dietician and Nutritionist Naini Setalvad says, "The saccharine in sweeteners could cause bladder cancer."
According to the National Cancer Institute, however, there is no scientific evidence that artificial sweeteners approved for use causes cancer. It is best to consume them in moderation or avoid completely, if you have a family history of cancer.
Aspartame in sweeteners is also known to aggravate brain tumour.
Stevia Mania
The herb Stevia claims to be the world's only all-natural sweetener with zero calories and zero carbohydrates. These attributes make it a good alternative to sugar or chemical sweeteners.
Especially popular as a sweetener for coffees and teas, Stevia can also be used in cooking and baking, helping you reduce your calorie intake and stay healthy.
Stevia used to be available in select stores in India but has been taken off the shelf, owing to lack of awareness about the product in the market.
Sugar-free Gum
Sugar-free chewing gums tend to include synthetic sweetener aspartame or natural sweetener xylitol. These are low-calorie sweeteners.
The non-cariogenic (doesn't cause dental problems) nature of sugar-free chewing gums brings significant dental benefits. They don't contain the sugars, which usually cause an increase in acid levels in the mouth.
These sugar alcohols in chewing gums may cause gastrointestinal upsets and diarrhoea in few cases. But for all practical purposes, they are safe.
Healthy Options
If you are diabetic, then stick to fresh fruits as a source of sugar in your diet. This will provide you with fibre and potent antioxidants.
Besides cutting down on sugar, eat a healthy diet that is naturally rich in nutrients and low in fats and calories. Include plenty of whole grain, fruits and vegetables in your meals.
