Here are a few essential summer dos and don'ts.
Cool the Burn
In case your skin is sunburnt; you can wet a pieces of cloth in cold water and put it on the sunburnt area. Frequent cool showers also help soothe the burn.
Do this for at least an hour. Cosmetologist Dr. Nishitha Sheth says that if this is done three times a day the burn will soothe and heal quickly.
Rid the Tan
Sometimes you tan despite the sunscreen. Here is how your kitchen will help you get rid of your tan.
You could also make a mixture of besan and rose water and apply it on the tanned area. Leave the mixture till it dries and wash off with tepid water.
A mixture of papaya, cream and sugar on the tanned area just before you bathe also helps get rid of the tan.
Clothe Right
Dr. Rui Fernandes, Dermatologist says, "If you simply have to go out in the sun, then make sure that you wear cotton clothes that have a close weave."
Remember that clothes act as a barrier against the sun. So while wearing sleeveless clothes is what most people do you must protect your skin from the sun by covering up!
Fun with Summer Foods
Yes, the right kind of food will help keep your body cool and skin healthy during the summer.
Healthy salads are a must-have for the summer simply because raw foods are more cooling. Eat lots of lettuce, cucumber, celery, radish, broccoli, tomatoes and other leafy vegetables.
Liquids to the Rescue
Water is the best to keep your body cool and free of toxins. But fresh fruit and vegetable juices also do wonders for healthy skin and overall health.
Cold Showers, a No-No!
As tempting as a cold shower may seem, it is a complete no-go in the summer. Dr. Fernandes says, "Your body will shut off blood flow to the skin if it gets too cold. This will not allow your body to produce sweat because it thinks it has to conserve heat." This is exactly the opposite of what should be happening.
It is essential that you sweat because this helps in ridding the body off its toxins. So take a tepid shower. Make sure you drink a lot of water to make up for loss during perspiration.
Crowning Glory is Summer Safe
You perspire from your head a lot more in the summer. The body produces extra sebum during this time. Using a lot of hair products like hair sprays, gel and mousse will affect your hair.
The sebum and sweat mixes with the hair products and forms a dense layer on your scalp which weighs your hair down.
DO NOT Bleach Your Hair
Do not bleach or highlight your hair during the summer. The chemicals in these products dry your hair and may end up burning it too.
Also, the summer heat will just worsen your hair and end up burning it.
Condition Well
It is always better to use a conditioner with a sunscreen in it.
These conditioners are available in select custom certified stores and reputed parlours across metros. Do check with your trichologist on where you can buy one and which one is ideal for you.
Blow Away Blow-Drying
Do not blow-dry your hair during the summer as it will dry your hair and cause static.
