Do certain foods really affect a baby's complexion, or are these just myths?
Add a bit of saffron in milk for a fair baby.
This is the most common myth.
Milk is an ideal source of calcium. Saffron by itself, does not carry any nutrients. You can add saffron to the milk if you wish to simply enhance the flavour.
Tea and coffee will make your baby dark.
Having too much tea or coffee will not turn your baby dark. Tea and coffee contain high levels of caffeine and this will affect your blood circulation.
Lack of proper blood circulation will affect your baby's nutrient and oxygen supply. This is why doctors advise against caffeine.
Coconut water will enhance your baby's complexion.
Coconut water keeps you hydrated and will help increase the amniotic fluid level in the uterus.
Coconut water is a good source of carbohydrates and sugar and acts as a good energy booster.
However, it doesn't have any impact on your baby's complexion.
Iron tablets can make your baby dark.
This isn't true.
Your doctor prescribes iron supplements in order to maintain your haemoglobin levels. So don't avoid these pills or you may become anaemic, which can cause complications.
If your blood level goes down, then your baby will not receive proper nutrition and oxygen.
Iron supplements help in formation of the placenta and helps in your baby's growth.
Oranges are good for your baby's skin.
Having oranges is beneficial for you as they are rich in vitamin C. However, it has absolutely no connection with your baby's complexion.
Have yogurt for a bright baby.
Again, this one is isn't true. However, yogurt is healthy as it is the best source of proteins. This is especially good if you have a protein deficiency.
The Bottom Line
The fact as far as your baby's complexion goes - skin colour is pre determined. It is genetically decided and doesn't depend on the food you eat.
The colour of the skin, hair and eyes is decided during fertilisation.
So the best thing you can do is eat healthy, so you will have a healthy baby.
