Why when, how… Get the lowdown on sex after pregnancy.
When is it safe to resume sex?
If you have had a normal delivery, i.e.: without any complications, it is usually okay to resume sex six weeks after you deliver. This will give you sufficient time to heal. However, if you have had a caesarean, it might take a longer time to recuperate. Some experts believe that it is okay to resume your sex life as soon as you feel comfortable to do so. Either ways, it is always best to get clearance from your gynaecologist first.
In cases where there have been complications during pregnancies or the mother hasn't been able to heal properly due to post-partum infections, the couple may have to wait for months before getting back to a normal sex life.
Do we need to use contraception?
Yes, you can get pregnant any time after delivery. It is a myth that nursing mothers don't need contraception.
As mothers are lactating, hormone-based contraceptives are not advisable. Also, using a diaphragm could be tricky, as the perineum muscles (the muscle between the vagina and the rectum) may be lax. Condoms or spermicidal solutions are ideal options.
In case you are forced to rely on a pill, the mini-pill with only progestin and no oestrogen is a good option.
Here are some common worries you may have:
Doubts About Pleasure
In a normal delivery, the mother's vaginal passage expands many times its original size. Most women fear that this 'lax' passage will diminish their partner's pleasure.
In most cases, the vagina returns to its original size soon after delivery. However, sexologists advise Kegel exercises as a safe method to bring the vagina back to its normal size after delivery. If you have any complications, consult an expert.
Loss of a Healthy Sexual Appetite
Many women lose interest in sex after delivery.
Some experts believe that the bonding between mother and child gives a woman immense satisfaction, that takes the place of the need for sex.
Another reason for a lack of sexual appetite is the sudden drop in oestrogen levels after delivery.
Changes in your Body
The extra pounds, heavy and tender breasts, loose skin and even stretch marks on the tummy… a woman's body undergoes significant physical changes after delivery. This affects her sexual confidence as many women believe their partners won't be interested in her changed, not so perfect body.
