I have an 18 year old and my theory of dealing with changes is just not dealing with it. I just let my son be. He has always been computer and TV crazy, but I've realised that the more I tell him to stay away, the more drawn he is towards that.
I know that times have changed now and he does not play as much as I would like him to. I let him do as much as he wants on the computer and TV and hope that this it is improving him intellectually.

My son Rushabh is 13 and he wants a whole lot of gizmos. I would love if he played more and got more physical activity. If I find him on the computer for too long, then I make sure that I tell him to get some physical activity as well.
There has to be an equal amount of intellectual and physical activity. Having said that, I cannot force him to play, so as clichéd as it sounds I just go with the flow.
I make sure I gently chide him and make sure that he gets an equal amount of physical activity too.
With newer and expensive gadgets coming out everyday, it is natural for our kids to want the latest. But mine does not ask for anything that we will not be able to afford. This I believe depends completely on how we bring up our children.
But yes, as much as I would like Rushabh to play a lot more, I have to accept that times have changed now. And just like our children have changed, we as parents have to change with the times too.
