Well, if the answer to any of the questions is yes, a career in social work may be just the one for you.
Cause and Effect
A dictionary defines social work as any activity or service, which aims to aid the poor and the aged and to increase the welfare of children. So, a social worker then is any individual who works voluntarily or is employed to provide her services to improve the condition of disadvantaged people in society.
Contrary to popular perception, social workers do not just work in rural areas or among the downtrodden. The scope of the profession extends to practically all strata of society and covers just about everyone - young and old, rich or poor, men and women.

As a social worker, depending on what cause is close to your heart, you can work with street children, the homeless, senior citizens, those with physical and mental disabilities and even with educated youth and adults to bring about awareness related to various causes.
Ultimately, social work is all about working with people, forming a relationship based on trust with them and helping them find solutions to their problems.
What It Takes
Given the nature of work a social worker does, it is important for you to truly believe in the area / nature of your work and empathise with people.
Depending on the kind of work you do, be prepared to face the grim realities of life - from disease and malnutrition to corruption and ignorance - and the shortcomings of a debauched society. Be prepared to put in long hours, which can drain you physically, mentally and even emotionally.
For those who want to work for child rights - specifically for the girl child - and women's issues, be prepared to face resistance to change. For example, girls are not allowed education even today, not only in rural areas but also in urban landscapes. Convincing parents to let their daughters study is easily said than done.
Individuals or organisations that work for social change often work with a paucity of funds. As a result, lofty ideas and ideals are often defeated due to economic compulsions. Work with what you have and make the best of every situation.
Don't let situations like the above mentioned frustrate you. Continue with dogged determination and sooner or later your efforts will be rewarded.
