Visual merchandising is not just about selling or displaying a product / merchandise. It is about selling a lifestyle!
As a VM, you need to make continuous effort to come up with new concepts and ideas to change the display at least every two months.
Keep in mind that the idea is not to only work on the store's window display. The inside layout matters equally. Always display only those products available in stock.
While working on a display, work season wise. Try and incorporate themes. Themes could be current or political and even based on Bollywood or Hollywood movies.
Getting Started
Visual merchandisers can work on a contract basis or even take on individual assignments. Begin by training / interning at a space management firm.
Depending on your experience, you can even conduct workshops for other industry professionals.
Once you have a sizeable portfolio, approach departmental stores and malls for work. Most have their own in-house team t work on the display.
A visual merchandiser's job is not restricted only to the apparels or fashion industry. Visual merchandisers also work for restaurants, hypermarkets and stores, which stock and sell fast moving consumer and lifestyle products. These include electronic items, furniture, etc.
What Is Your Worth?
Since visual merchandising is a relatively new field, there is a demand for professionals. If you are good at what you do, you can start at about Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 12,000 per month.
Senior visual merchandisers can earn as much as Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 30,000 per month. Ultimately, if you build a reputation, the sky is the limit!
