A data entry operator may be referred to as a typist, data entry keyer, keypunch technician and transcriber.
Nature of Job
Primarily, as data entry operator you would be responsible for preparing reports, letters, mailing lists or labels and other material. At the entry-level you may begin by keying headings on form letters, addressing envelopes or preparing standard forms on computers.
Senior data entry operators may work with highly technical material, plan and key complicated statistical tables, combine and rearrange materials from different sources, or prepare master copies. They may also manipulate existing data, edit current information and proof new entries into a database for accuracy.
Examples of data sources include customers' personal information, medical records and membership lists. Such information is used internally by a company and may be reformatted before other departments or customers utilise it.
Skills and Qualifications
A minimum qualification of 10+2 in any stream is a must. A graduation degree is an asset. However, hands-on experience would give you an edge over others. Moreover, a basic knowledge about the industry you work in would be beneficial.
Effective written and oral communication skills and knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and data management systems (working knowledge of MS Office) along with familiarity of office equipments and procedures is important.
A basic computer course from NIIT costs Rs. 900. Specialised computer skills, if required, can be acquired for Rs. 5,000 to Rs 6,000 from any reputable computer institute.
