What You Need
- As with any profession, experience always helps, and so do educational qualifications.
- A degree in journalism or literature, will definitely give you the edge.
- Any experience of reporting, copy writing or editing with a company, will also add to your profile.
- Companies would also like to see published samples of your work, if any.
- If don't have any published work, you could show them a writing sample or ask them to visit your blog, if you have one.
Whom to Approach
If you have no contacts, then you can start by posting your profile on any of the jobsites like Naukri, Monster, Jobstreet, Jobsahead or Timesjobs. Writers are usually in demand and it won't be long before offers start coming in.
You could either be writing for the web or for print. If it is news, financial or creative writing you are interested in, there are a whole host of dailies, supplements, magazines and web publications to choose from.
Approach ad agencies if copywriting interests you!
IT and e-learning companies are always on the lookout for freelance technical writers and content developers. The subject you write on is finally up to you - it could be news, lifestyle, food, technical subjects, automobiles, money, travel…the options are practically endless.
