If your kids share a bedroom, a trundle bed is a great option. It occupies the space of a single bed but opens out into a double bed when it is bedtime.

The only draw back about a trundle bed is the fact that the levels of the two mattresses will be different. However, very advanced furniture stores have a certain mechanism fitted into the bed that makes the pullout portion pop up the same height as the other one.
