However, like other surgeries, laparoscopy comes with its share of post procedural problems.
Eminent gynaecologists Dr. Ranjana Dhanu and Dr. Suchitra Pandit tell you what to expect after a laparoscopic surgery and how to cope with it.
What is Laparoscopy?
A laparoscopic procedure is a quick way to diagnose gynaecological problems, as well fix some of them with the help of laser beams.
It is a procedure by which a small incision is made in the abdomen. After that, a thin tube with a tiny camera is inserted. This camera is connected to monitor and gives a clear view of any gynaecological problems like fibroids or tumours.
Pre-Surgery
Since you are going in for a different kind of surgery, you will go through intensive counselling about what you can expect from the surgery and after.
Post Surgery
Usually, local anaesthesia is administered prior to the surgery, so you will not feel any pain. However, after the anaesthesia fades away, there will be severe pain in and around the area of the incision.
Apart from that, you will also experience pain in your right shoulder. This is due to the carbon dioxide gas that is pumped into your system for better visibility.
Your throat might also feel a little sore. This is also due to the excess carbon dioxide rising into your food pipe.
Remember that this gas is not the usual abdominal gas, so don't pop over-the-counter pills to feel better. Your doctor will prescribe appropriate painkillers.
Usually, the gas and its consequent problems are resolved within 24-48 hours.
- You can try hot fermentation around the incision area.
- For the sore throat, try salt water gargling.
Also, every 4-5 days you will need to change the dressing after the stitches have been removed. This will be done by your doctor, so make sure you visit her on time to avoid any risks.
Healing Process
Since the tube is inserted into your abdomen, it will pass by many of your vital organs. It usually takes about six weeks for these inner wounds to heal.
Recouping is much easier due to the miniscule size of the incision. You can return to your daily activities -- like driving, exercise and sex -- about 1-2 weeks after the procedure.
Risks Involved
If and when you find these symptoms, call your doctor immediately.
- Bleeding from the incision wound
- Excessive abdominal pain
- Vomiting
- Fever
Remember, laparoscopic surgery could cause problems in the kidneys, as well as infertility. So, before you go in for it, discuss the pros and cons with your doctor.
