Home remedies might work for your hair but make sure that you are aware of their side effects as well.
Egg
Egg yoke is meant to increase the volume of your hair and egg white is known to nourish hair strands.
According to Dr. Josy Joy, Trichologist and Homeopathist, 'Care and Cure', Health Clinic, Bangalore, egg yoke is nothing but fat and will not really improve the condition of your hair in any way.
It does not increase the volume of your hair either. Loss of hair can be due to several reasons such as vitamin or iron deficiency, hormone imbalance, polycystic ovaries etc. Unless it is treated internally, applying anything on your hair externally will not really change anything.
However, the egg white, on the other hand, does nourish your hair as it consists of good amounts of protein. You can apply egg once a week for an hour or so and wash off with a mild shampoo.
Henna
Henna is famous for its conditioning properties. But what are its side-effects?
Dr. Joy says that henna can be used to condition your hair. However, keep these pointers in mind:
- If you have a dry scalp you should avoid using it as it would increase the dryness.
- It can aggravate a sinus problem as it makes the scalp cold.
- Over a period of time, henna gives the hair a brownish tinge. However, if you are keen on applying it then do not apply it more than once a fortnight.
Curd
Curd is another popular home remedy that is used to get rid of dandruff. Dr. Joy says that that curd does condition the hair to some extent. It gets rid of dandruff as well, but the effects are temporary, and you can expect the dandruff to return in another two days.
However, curd does not harm your hair in anyway.
Lime
Seen the shampoo ads that boast of having lime that nourishes hair and gets rid of dandruff? So, why not use lime itself?
Dr. Raj Parikh, Dermatologist, says that lime is nothing but citric acid that helps exfoliate your scalp and hence reduces dandruff. However, using too much lime can result in 'dermatitis', an inflammation marked by redness of the scalp.
Also, lime does not really help you if you have dandruff due to a fungus issue
Camphor
Camphor is mixed with oil and applied on the hair.
According to Dr. Raj, camphor does have a cooling effect and reduces dandruff on a temporary basis.
However, camphor does not suit everybody and can result in an allergy. In case you notice any kind of allergy erupting after using camphor, discontinue applying it immediately.
