Split Causes
The most common reason why you would have split ends is exposure to extreme temperatures, not enough oil and lack of nourishment. Consequently, the protective cuticle gets stripped from the ends of your hair fibres. Split ends are more likely to develop in dry or brittle hair, and typical causes of damage include excessive chemicals or vigorous brushing.
In fact, your seemingly innocent hair pin could also be a major culprit for split ends because when you try to take it out, it can rip the hair.
