Is your home a dust magnet? Your occasional spring-cleaning is just never enough?
If you wish you had a fuss free home, here are a couple of makeover tips you better not miss. And it is guaranteed you won't have to pick up that mop quite as often as you used to.
Floors and Walls
Wooden flooring not only needs to be waxed frequently but also needs to be protected from pointed objects like heels. Laminates and vinyl are a better option. These can be cleaned easily with a damp mopping. - Invest a little extra in washable paint. It will be worth it once your baby begins to colour on the walls.
- Dirt gets stuck in the uneven parts of stone flooring. As a result, even vacuuming might not be enough. You will face the same problem with carpets too. So avoid stone and carpet flooring unless you have both time and patience.
Windows - Pretty as they might seem, grills with intricate curvy patterns can be a pain. Opt for simple ones without many grooves that can be easily wiped clean.
- Especially if you live by a busy street, fabrics like velvet, suede and taffeta are a bad idea. Think easy maintenance Venetian blinds instead. But if blinds aren't dressy enough try curtains in lightweight fabrics like organza, satin and silk.
- Opt for clear glass windowpanes. This way you can keep out dust and prevent your furnishings from fading. Plus you can enjoy the natural light.
Kitchen - Always choose granite for kitchen counters. They are not porous and do not get stained easily.
- Don't choose high maintenance porcelain cookware that your servant might break when washing. Pick melamine plates and stainless steel glasses for everyday use.
- A plastic sheet over the tablecloth of your dining table will make cleaning up a whole lot easier.
Furniture - Avoid carved furniture. Once dust collects in the tiny spaces it is very difficult to get it out.
- If you live on the ocean front, then stay away from wrought iron furniture. The iron might rust with the moisture.
- With messy toddlers around, removable sofa covers are better than fixed upholstery.
Toilet
Opt for a wall-hung water closet (WC) instead of a floor mounted one. It costs a little more but you will be able to clean the floor under the WC well. - Make sure the bathroom tiles are laid and grouted well without gaps. If not, grime tends to collect in the spaces.
- Don't choose a wooden frame for the bathroom window as it might rot with moisture. Try powder coated aluminium louvers instead.
