And what about the balancing act on that wobbly stool while reaching something for on the loft?
Yes, deep shelves, corner storages and even far off light switches can be a real pain. But there is a way for you to access these spaces without spraining something. All you need is a little improvisation.
Roller Shelves
Sometimes the 'smartest' storage ideas turn out to be a real pain in the neck… literally. Take for instance, a cupboard in a wall niche. Once you start using it, you realise it is so dark in there. Also, you have to climb into it every time you need something in the back.
But with some built-in lighting and pullout shelves, you can fix this.
Better Half
Doesn't it irk you every time you want that pickle jar from the back of the cabinet? Don't you wish the cabinet would magically part open and make way for you?
Well, this can be done. Build half the shelf onto the back frame of the cabinet and the rest of it onto the door. This way when you open the cabinet, you will see everything at one go.
Wired for Comfort
You are curled up in bed with a romantic bestseller and start to doze off. You decide to turn in but the light switch is half way across the room. And you are just too cosy to get up. So don't. Just rework the electrical points. Place your switches strategically so you won't have to reach too high up or walk across the room to turn off the bedside lamp.
Also, be sure to have another switch at the entrance of rooms and either ends of passage ways. This way you won't stumble over furniture or knock down a vase in the dark.
Mirrors are another strategic place for plug points. They avoid you having to stretch your hair dryer or electric shaver cord too much when in use.
Get a Grip
Every monsoon the drawers get jammed. And when you tug at the knobs, they tend to come off. The solution is to replace knobs with D-shaped handles. They may not be stronger but they are easier to grip and tug at.
While storing books, always place them with the binding facing upward or outward. This way you can see the names and pick what you need.
A key holder placed near the entrance of your house will not just keep your keys in place but will remind you to take them along every time you go out.
