But, when should you expect this to happen? And what if she starts teething early, or even late, for that matter? What can you do to help it?
Here's what Child Specialist and Honorary Secretary General of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, Dr. Deepak Ugra says about it.
Ideal Time
According to Dr. Ugra, the ideal time for your little one to develop her first two milk teeth is any time between 7 to 15 months.
In fact, your child could even be born with teeth. This kind of teeth is called natal teeth. However, make sure you get this checked with a child specialist, because if the tooth is loose or there is any infection, then it needs to be extracted immediately.
Otherwise, there is a chance that the infection will spread.
Late Call
Don't panic if your baby does not get his first tooth on time. Dr. Ugra says, "I have seen babies who did not get their first tooth even at 16 months. These kids finally developed a perfect set of teeth."
But, if he doesn't develop any teeth even after this time period, make sure you visit a child specialist for a thorough check up.
Early Beginnings
In the same way, don't panic if your little one develops her first teeth at even three months.
According to Dr. Ugra, the only risk is that there may be inflammation of the gums because the teeth developed at an early stage.
Signs to Watch Out For
When your little one is teething, she may get mild fever. Dr. Ugra says, "Usually, temperatures are within 100 degree centigrade. This low grade fever is considered normal during teething."
At this stage, you can give her Paracetamol to relieve her of the fever. But, double check with your doctor first.
However, if the fever rises above the 100 degree centigrade mark, it is possible that she has some infection or flu. Make sure you get her checked at the earliest.
What About the Toys?
Teething toys are usually safe, if you buy them from reputed brands. Remember, your little one will be trying to chew everything in sight. So make sure her toys are safe.
Apart from that, the toys should be clean. At this stage, you cannot stop her from trying to chew everything, from the remote control to your finger. So you need to keep your home and yourself, as clean as possible.
According to Dr. Ugra, any dust or dirt in your little one's system now, could result in a bad case of diarrhoea. So keep your home dust and dirt free.
Ease the Pain
Your baby will feel a whole lot of discomfort when he starts teething. He will feel some pain and irritability. So, here are some tips you can use for easing the pain:
Give her something cool to chew on. For example, you could let her chew a sealed ice candy. Otherwise, you can give her spoon or teething toy that has been kept in the freezer.
Apart from that, you can rub your fingers over her gum. Apply some pressure when you do this, as it can considerably reduce the discomfort. Just don't put too much pressure.
You can also feed her cool foods like yoghurt, custard, etc. But don't overdo it, or she may catch a cold.
