Hold on! This ride on your partner's bike may end-up in a disaster with your stole or dupatta entangled in the tyre or worse with you getting choked because of it!
While riding pillion on a bike, if you want to look good and be safe, follow these simple tips.

Cross Over
Never sit with your legs on one side. A speeding vehicle can hit your knees, before you even see it coming. Always sit with your legs on either side of the bike. But make sure your legs are not parted very wide.
Sitting in this position is not only very comfortable, but also safe. There are fewer chances of you slipping and falling off the bike.
Safety Rules
- Don't make sudden movements. This will make the bike wobble and the rider lose control.
- Avoid carrying too much luggage for a long journey. You might try to pile up the bag on the seat and fall short of space for yourself.
- Use saree guards on the bike to prevent any piece of clothing from getting stuck in it.
Dress Code
Say no to sarees and long skirts as far as possible, especially on long journeys. They can prove to be very uncomfortable and can cause major injury, if caught in the wheel.
Also avoid using long scarves, as it trail or even distract the rider if it hits his face. Also, make sure you tie your hair and don't leave it open flying in the dusty air.
If the bike has a plastic or rexine cover, don't wear nylon or synthetic clothes. There are strong chances of you slipping off the bike.
Try these looks for a comfy ride…
- Team your favourite pair of jeans with a cotton t-shirt. While riding during the afternoon, make sure you wear a full sleeve t-shirt to protect your hands from the sun.
- For an ethnic look, go for cotton pants and a short full-sleeve kurta. You can pick them from W store or FabIndia.
- For a sporty day out, team a sweatshirt with a matching pair of track pants. Complete your look with track shoes and a sporty tote bag.
- You can also go for a pair of Capri pants, teamed with a tank top. Carry a jacket if riding during the day.
Don't forget to wear sunscreen, even while riding during early evening. Sunscreen acts a protective shield not just against sun, but also stops dust from getting in too the pores.
Helmets Can be Stylish!
Pillion riders too need a helmet. In an accident the pillion riders are hurt as much as the rider. So make sure you wear a safety helmet every time you ride a bike.
Don't want to wear the big and fully covered helmets? Then, go for the much cuter jockey helmets. But if you are game for the regular helmet, make it a snazzy. Buy a helmet with absolutely no print, then use stickers or paint to add jazz.
Remember to tuck all your hair in the helmet. The easy way to do that would be by tying a bun and then wearing a helmet.
