Pune: A week after the Pune police busted nearly 271 party-goers at a rave party, CNN-IBN went to Pune to gauge how the city’s mammoth student community was reacting to the incident.
In a special show, called After the Rave, CNN-IBN’s Anuradha SenGupta interacted with a panel comprising students, teachers, HR consultants and locals and tried to explore the uneasy equilibrium in the city and find solutions to bridge a widening social divide.
Representing the student community on the discussion panel were passionate and articulate students, most of whom were from the city’s Symbiosis Institute. There were also young professionals and parents.
The panel of experts comprised Symbiosis Joint Director Vidya Yerewdekar; Editorial Director of the Sakaal Group of papers, Anand Agashe; and Director of Cerebrus Consultants, Varda Pendse.
Changing Times, Changing with Times
The idea of what is and what isn’t socially acceptable is changing and everyone — from across different generations and walks of life — has to come to terms with it and find a new equilibrium.
At the beginning of the show, the students were asked if they reacted to the rave bust with a 'Oh my God! I could have been there and it could've been me' statement. Interestingly, a significant majority answered in the affirmative.
"Yes, I could have been there. I keep going to parties. So I could have been there. Parties keep happening every night. So that was it. I think it was just after Holi, so it was too over-dramatised," says a student from among the audience.
Pune is perhaps the one city in India that has the largest student community in India. So what do students think the rave bust has done to city’s image?
"Pune has come into the headlines not because of the study factor, but because of these rave parties, drug abuse and because of these kids. I wouldn't be really upset about them, because I think this kind of thing happens in every city. But it's over-dramatised here," opines another student.
Why do students go to a rave party?
What is a rave party? What is it about a rave that appeals to youngsters?
"Most people go to a rave party to listen to the music, because there is trance music as well. A lot of people go out of curiosity. You can’t just put them all in the same bracket. They are not all druggies or dopies. Some go there out of genuine curiosity." says a student from among the participants.
