However there are couples who have met and wed, all thanks to the internet.
Here, a few of them tell you their story.
I Accept You
Rohan D'souza, a professional photographer, 34 and Bekxy Kuriakose, a fund manager, 29 met on shaadi.com.
Rohan recalls, "I saw Bekxy's profile and liked it. Now shaadi.com has an "Accept" option that you click when you like a person's profile. I clicked "Accept" and waited."
"A few days later I got an email alert stating that she too accepted my profile. Since her profile said that she worked as a fund manager, I asked a few friends in the finance field to get me her contact details," he continues.
"I then called her and as luck would have it she had no idea about the interaction on shaadi.com!" he laughs. "Turns out that her father had uploaded her profile and the interaction and 'acceptances' were between her father and me."
Bekxy was nice and said that she would look at Rohan's details on the site and get back to him.
" What she saw obviously impressed her because she called me a couple of days later and we met the following weekend."
The rest as they say is history. They dated for four months, got engaged for two and were married after that.
"All I can say is that my wife and I are happy together. Touchwood."
"I Don't Know You!"
Rakesh Pal, a flight attendant and Yasmin Ahuja, a lawyer met on Orkut.
Yasmin says, "I was on Orkut to reconnect with old friends. If someone…anyone told me that I would meet my husband there, I would have laughed in their face."
"I on the other hand was looking to find someone," recalls Rakesh. "For me the internet was just another option to finding the right woman. I am constantly flying and have no time for myself, leave alone meeting women. So for me social networking sites were an easy option to meet and connect with women."
Yasmin had clearly stated "Strangers, DO NOT send me any friend requests" in the 'About Me' section. Ignoring her request Rakesh sent Yasmin a friend request anyway and waited.
"I rejected the request immediately. I did not need new friends and certainly not ones who ignored what I put in the 'About Me' section. But Rakesh being Rakesh resent the request four times after that. I finally scrapped him asking if he liked getting rejected," says Yasmin.
"He said that he did not mind the world rejecting him but never ever wanted me to reject him. From then of course we scrapped each other regularly, chatted on MSN, met two months after Orkut, dated for three years after that and then married."
"Needless to say marrying him was the best decision I ever made".
Rakesh smiles, "It was her eyes. They spoke a million words to me and I still wanted to know more."
