What's the right question?
It seemed like a perfect proposal. Clint was young, good-looking and Harvard educated! "Meet him; what do you have to lose?" asked my uncle. Oddly enough, the prospective groom had to fly back to the US a day before I met him. His father though, insisted on meeting me.
Deliberately leaving my parents behind, I went with my uncle and aunt. The father resembled Santa Claus and soon enough I was put to the grind. He asked away - what do you do? How educated are you? Blah, blah, blah. . . so, how many boyfriends do you have?
Boyfriends? Just what did he mean! Sitting there and assuming that I had not one but several boyfriends. And then the absolute shocker! "Are you fertile?" he asked. I couldn't believe what I had just heard! I wanted to beat the man silly but just sat there statue like.
Before long the charade was over and I walked out stunned, a little confused and fuming. I wasn't as angry with that 'man' as much as I was angry at myself for not slapping or even hitting that no-man where it hurt the most!
Hey man, are you man enough?
Mumbai girl at heart, Gurpreet is young, pretty, educated and of marriageable age (said her aunt). Soon enough, nosy, fixer aunt arranges for a match and cordially invites Gurpreet, her parents and sister for brunch. There is just one problem - Gurpreet and her family do not even know this is a 'proposal meeting'!
The prospective groom-to-be Mohan was an engineer who has lived in a Punjab village all his life. Shy and withdrawn, he wouldn't even look at Gurpreet, leave alone talking to her. Gurpreet on the other hand was most comfortable in her capris and tee, much to the discomfort of poor Mohan who beat a hasty retreat to the next room!
During dessert, aunt tries to cajole Mohan to come out but he preferred solitude to the company pretty girl. What a man! Both families continued to converse amongst themselves even as fixer aunt hovered around.
Talk about being shy…this was taking it to another level altogether!
