Do not hesitate to ask your husband-to-be for the divorce decree, which will confirm the divorce. Read it thoroughly and show it to an advocate to ascertain that it is an original, valid one.
You need to know why he divorced. Was it a one-way divorce? Did his ex-wife file for it? Why? These are questions to which you must know the answers to!
Money Matters
In most cases, the husband has to support his ex-wife by paying her alimony. Is your husband-to-be doing so? If yes find out how much the alimony amount is? You need to know whether he will be able to support you and your family, when you start one.
What are the assets he owns? Are they in joint name with his ex-wife? Is he going to give up his rights to any of them? These are some of the things you must know about. You also need to know that what you will be entitled to after the marriage.
For example, if your husband-to-be's flat is in joint-name with his ex-wife, what right do you have over it? Can she claim it after his death? You need to know such details to protect yourself.
Are there any children involved? Who has their custody? if his ex-wife does, then what are his visitation rights? Will he bring them home for the weekend? You need to know!
If you and your husband are buying a new home then find out if the children with his first wife are entitled to it. Also if you two have children of your own then find out what their rights are.
