But you wake up the next day and you find a trace of blood stain in your panty. If you think this is normal, think again!
According to Dr. Mugdha Raut, a Gynaecological Counsellor, "Traces of bleeding from the vagina could be due to many reasons, including local, uterine, hormonal or ovarian. So, don't neglect the symptoms and get yourself checked at the earliest."
But Before That…
For all those of you who don't know what is spotting, here is what you can expect:
- Light loss of blood with a bright red colouration
- Light loss of blood that is brownish red in colour
- A dry brownish residue kind of blood discharge
What are the Reasons?
Remember, there is no direct gynaecological diagnosis that can be done for spotting. This is because there are multiple reasons why you could have spotting.
It is important that your gynaecologist knows your entire history before she can come to a conclusion about your problem.
Here are some of the reasons which will help you figure out why you are spotting.
Local Reasons
This could be an abrasion or a cut in the outer vaginal area. It could also mean you have some sort of erosion in your uterine lining.
Apart from that, you could also have spotting and bleeding if you have had any kind of sexual abuse.
Uterine Reasons
This could be either uterine polyps or uterine fibroids. Also, don't neglect the possibility of intra-uterine bleeding.
Ovarian Reasons
A problem with the ovaries can also cause spotting symptoms. Check for any dysfunction of the ovaries as well as Poly Cystic Ovarian Disorder.
Hormonal Reasons
A hormonal imbalance can also cause spotting. So, make sure you get a blood test done to check hormone levels.
Spotting and Pregnancy
Any spotting during pregnancy is extremely risky. So make sure you intimate your doctor immediately. Usually, spotting during the first few months of pregnancy could be a threatened abortion.
Spotting and Menopause
If your periods start becoming irregular, it could be a sign of the onset of menopause. Remember, during this time, the ovarian function usually stops, hence there is bleeding also gradually stops.
Also, according to Dr. Raut, older women have a higher risk of ovarian and uterine cancer. Hence, spotting could also mean increased chances of cancer. So, make sure you get that Pap Smear test done.
Apart from that, spotting could also be a sign that your ovaries have started functioning again. This is not normal and needs immediate attention.
This in turn, could result in infertility.
