Dr. Kiran Coelho, Gynaecologist explains, "The vagina is moist and acidic. The blood during your monthly cycle is a good medium for bacteria to develop and grow. Hence the odour."
Read up and see what you can do to fight menstrual odour.
Reasons for Menstrual Odour
Vaginal Hygiene
Lack of vaginal hygiene is the most common reason for menstrual odour. You must change your tampons every three to six hours. Since tampons are inserted into the vagina, there is greater chance of infection. If the infection is caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, it could lead to Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). These bacteria produce toxins, which could be harmful. Watch out for symptoms like fatigue, fever, vomiting or unusual vaginal discharge. If you notice these symptoms, see your gynaecologist immediately.
Use good quality sanitary pads that are comfortable, snugly fit and have thick cotton layering. Scented pads are not a quick solution. These could cause unwanted skin reactions.
Excessive Perspiration
Even excess sweat could trigger odour. Gynaecologist, Dr. Suchitra Pandit, Sion Hospital says, "Menstrual odour is strongly present in some women who have hormones similar to that of a male. They usually have more body hair and also undergo lots of hormonal changes."
Bad Diet
You need to watch what you eat. Red meats, extremely oily foods or food with garlic could aggravate menstrual odour. Nutritionist, Naini Setalwad advises plenty of fruits, dry fruits especially figs and almonds, raw salads and herbal tea to curb menstrual odour.
Preventing Menstrual Odour
- Change your sanitary napkin every three to four hours.
- Always trim pubic hair. Don't shave it off as this could irritate the skin and leave it dry.
- During your monthly cycles avoid tight jeans and trousers. Always wear cotton underwear.
- It is advisable to take a bath twice a day during your periods.
- After visiting the loo, wipe the genital area in a downward motion (from top to bottom). "An upward motion may spread the germs from the anal area to the vaginal area," explains Gynaecologist, Dr. Sudha Tandon who heads Dr. Sudha Tandon's Infertility, IVF, Maternity and Endoscopy Center in Mumbai. Always keep the area dry.
- Douching does not prevent odour. In fact, it could irritate the vagina and cause an infection.
